Appleton City dates its birth to a short time before the arrival of the Iron Horse or what was known as the Tebo & Nesho Railroad. (The later became the Katy or Missouri-Kansas & Texas division of the Missouri Pacific Railroad). In 1868, William M. Prier one of the first settlers in St. Clair County, purchased the ground that is now embraced within the city limits. He platted a portion for a town but failed to realize on it at the time. The city was then known as Arlington it was platted in September of 1870 and a local area paper reported in October of that year that the new town had thirty good buildings being constructed and double or treble that number under contract. It would be as far as Arlington got. On the third attempt to start a town success was made with its present name of Appleton City, after being incorporated in December of 1870. Appleton City was named in honor of William Henry Appleton, president of the Appleton Publishing Co. of New York City. Mr. Appleton gave $300.00 to build a library. In a prime location in the northwest corner of St. Clair County, Appleton City is within a mile of Bates County line and one and a half miles from the southern border of Henry County. Its midway between Butler, the Bates County seat and Osceola, the St. Clair County seat. It was felt that the city’s location and the progressive spirit of its people would make the new city grow and prosper in time. Despite the few set backs at its beginning, it has. Several of the cities first buildings were moved in from other towns by the new settlers. Everything from stores, churches, mills and elevators even an opera house were brought to the new Missouri town of Appleton City.
